SPRING flowers at Stanford Inn Mendocino

We’ve been thinking a lot about hope. Usually we are “hoping for” something, an outcome. Rev. Cameron Trimble writes about a “braver form of hope.” Introduced centuries ago by St. John of the Cross – a hope “that does not rise and fall with the latest developments…is not dependent on visible progress…that is sustained by a deeper orientation, a willingness to stay engaged in what is good.”

Hoping for peace, for example, is not waiting for its arrival, but acting as if it has arrived. It is not wishful thinking, but intentional acting.”

This Earth Day, let’s embrace this intentional hope for our planet, and carry it throughout the year. As we like to say, here at the Stanford Inn, “everyday is Earth Day!”

Sid’s 50K Trail Ultramarathon always falls this weekend and this year, participants aged 17-72 are running (from 20 states, Germany, South Africa!). Let’s celebrate the spirit that pushes us forward to do more, to do better, to do good. Small steps led us to the moon!
