We just returned from an extended vacation/holiday (our first in 45 years since beginning innkeeping here). We drove to Vancouver, B.C. to visit family, ferrying to Bowen Island for a wedding, and then returning to the Mainland and the long drive to Lake Winnipeg, in Manitoba. We returned driving through the US, discussing the different places we stayed.

We experienced an emphasis on technology, and new hotel design featuring monotone themes in remodeled or new accommodations. Often friendly staff, smiling, watching, however, rarely accessible, engaging. We realized that we want to give our guests more, you more. We want guests to experience – not just relaxation, but curiosity and realization. And in doing so, we differentiate ourselves through that desire – for you to experience what we do and what keeps us here, engaged.

Arriving home last Wednesday night, lights welcomed us. We could see gardens and lawns (important when traveling with Parker and Pepper, our dogs), the lobby warm and inviting. Many of the hostelries in which we stayed merely asked for photo ID, a credit card before giving us our room card keys, somewhat of a care-less welcome. We noted whether or not our room had personality. As owner innkeepers, we pay attention to details because they impact overall enjoyment and we looked for that “touch” at the hostelries in which we stayed. We want nothing to get in the way of our guests experiencing the best of Mendocino and of the property to help assure a meaningful vacations.

Vacations can be many things: a time to slow down, unplug or to rush from sight to sight, experience to experience, to maximize time in a new place; to feel energized, shaking ourselves out of a rut. Whether slowing down or speeding up, vacations are an opportunity to expand, to enjoy every day. How lucky we are to come home, realizing we live here, in a sanctuary for many. At home, we may not be able to continue our vacation mind-set, but we can continue to create a place where our guests feel well-taken care of. Because we, and that includes everyone working here, do really care.

Thanks to all of you who voted for us in USA Today’s Best Eco-Friendly Hotels! You put us in the Top 10 against much larger properties.
